Meriweather shines in victory over Suns

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ Jon ‘Excitement Machine’ Meriweather scored 51 in last night’s State Basketball League fixture.

This career high score underlined the dominant Redbacks’ men’s team performance in defeating the Kalamunda Eastern Suns 129 to 76.

Meriweather’s points were at an amazing field goal percentage of 86. It included what he described as his ‘tomahawk dunk’, which stunned the Kalamunda crowd with some experienced State Basketball League observers describing it as the greatest dunk seen in the league.

Meriweather’s outstanding personal effort was even more significant as he also brought down 11 rebounds as well as making three blocked shots and two assists.

The next highest scorer for the Redbacks was forward Jesse Wagstaff with 18 points along with eight rebounds, five steals, three assists and one blocked shot. Shooting guard Jarrad Prior scored 11 points along with nine assists and two steals, while fellow shooting guard Ryan Neill also had 11 points as well as four rebounds and one assist.

Small-forward Robert Cassir scored nine points at a field goal percentage of 60 along with two blocked shots, while point guard Joel Wagner scored eight points along with seven assists and one steal.

The large-win allowed Redbacks’ coach David Harris to give the bench a good run. Forward Blake Smith made the most of this opportunity in scoring six points in his 15 minutes on-court along with four rebounds and two steals.

The win sees the Redbacks’ men with a season record of four wins and two losses and in third place in the 14-team competition.

The Redbacks’ women’s team also had a strong win against the Suns with a score of 59 to 50. Redbacks’ forward Brooke Hiddlestone was again the game-high scorer with 18 points along with 10 rebounds and seven assists.

Shooting guard Narelle Henry scored 11 points at a field goal percentage of 50 along with four assists and two steals, while fellow shooting guard Kerise Delcoure scored nine points along with four rebounds.

Forward Martine Pearman scored eight along with six rebounds, two assists and two steals while centre Frances Clarke also scored eight along with six rebounds.

The Redbacks’ women’s team now has four wins and one loss and is in third place in the 12-team competition.

The Redbacks’ next game is this Sunday (11 April) at Belmont Oasis Stadium (corner Alexander and Abernethy Roads, Belmont) against the strong East Perth Eagles women’s and men’s teams, both of whom currently occupy first place on the ladder.

All basketball fans are encouraged to come down and watch this ‘Clash of the Titans’ fixture, with the women’s game starting at 11AM and the men’s game at 1PM.
