Week Six Women's Wrap

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves caused a major upset by defeating Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks 58-54 in round six of the women’s State Basketball League.

The Wolves led by nine at the final break and held off a final quarter comeback from the Redbacks to claim its third win for the season.

Rebecca Mercer was again Wanneroo’s best performer with 20 points while Danielle Lipscombe was also impressive with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

Perth lost for the second straight week, seeing it fall to fifth, despite a dominant performance from Brooke Hiddlestone, who had 24 points and 23 rebounds.

Wanneroo didn’t fare as well the next night in a 59-72 loss to Rockingham Flames.

Rockingham outscored the Wolves 24-13 in the first quarter and was never in danger from that point, with Kaye Tucker (23 points, nine rebounds) its best performer.

Mercer top scored for Wanneroo with 23 while Meghan D’Arcy had 11 points and nine boards.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles stayed at the top of the league by beating Lakeside Lightning 85-64.

Samantha Norwood was outstanding with 25 points for East Perth, which outscored the Lightning 63-40 after quarter time.

Courtney Byrnes had 16 points for Lakeside while Jessica Van Schie was again strong defensively with five steals.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks held onto third spot with a 72-64 win over ATD Stirling Senators.

Tanya Kelly top scored for the Hawks with 18 while Michelle Joy had 25 points and 15 rebounds to be the best for Stirling, which had 26 team turnovers.

AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns inflicted further pain on Stirling the next night with a 69-46 win.

It was only Kalamunda’s second win for the season but an important one which allows it to keep pace with the top eight.

Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 64-50 despite 24 turnovers.

The Cougars shot just 33.3 percent from the field but despite Ella Buckley’s haul of 18 points while Kate Fielding had 16 for the Slammers.

Southlands Boulevard Willetton Tigers made Southwest look second rate the night before in a 102-43 annihilation.

Kate Malpass had 37 points, six steals and six assists for the dominant Tigers, which extended its winning streak to six games.
