Vaudreuil leads Giants to clean sweep on road

Another powerful display from American import John Vaudreuil led the SKILLED Goldfields Giants to a clean sweep of their State Basketball League road double-header on Sunday night.

After Saturday’s rare away victory 113-104 over the Geraldton Buccaneers, the Giants backed up by posting a 108-83 win over the Wanneroo Wolves – punctuated by Vaudreuil’s fifth double-double in nine games.

The 203cm forward/centre racked up 26 points and 17 rebounds and was among six Giants in double figures on the offensive end.

Fellow American Michael Haney, forward Todd Earle and versatile recruit Lordan Franich all finished with 16 points.

Guard Jimmy Bowler, who is averaging a career-high 9.2 points, added 12 while acting captain Matt Leske chipped in with 11.

The Giants led 25-22 at quarter-time, but went into the main break down 49-45.

Goldfields blew the game wide open in the third period when they outscored the Wolves 32-16, heading into the final change 77-65 in front.

Vaudreuil posted 11 of his 26 points in the final period to set up the Giants’ fourth win in a row for a 7-3 win-loss record under rookie head coach Wayne Creek.

The win enabled the Giants to return to the SBL’s top-four for the first time in nine games.

It also proved they have the depth to cover the loss of captain Ryan Hulme, who is due to return against East Perth at Kalgoorlie’s Neils Hansen Basketball Stadium next Saturday.

Hulme scored 29 points in his last outing against Perth but has missed the past six games – a testing period which has yielded five wins and a 103-84 loss to Cockburn.

The Giants can consolidate a top-four spot by making the most of a travel-friendly May schedule when they play four of their next six games at home.
