Coach: 'Buccs have to stop lapses'

RAY Evans said his team needs to make more of their chances after Saturday’s dogged win over Cockburn Cougars at Tip Top Stadium.

The Geraldton Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers coach believes hard work was made of the 105-95 victory.

He blamed a lapse in concentration when the Buccs left the door ajar despite leading 14 points at the first change.

“Every game we’ve lost this year we’ve been a similar situation where we start the game well and then we have a lapse,” he said.

“It’s only for two or three minutes, but all of a sudden we have a 14 point lead and they get within two or three and then it’s a dog fight all night.

“Luckily enough for us we fought our way out of it.”

The win saw the Buccs (8-3) slip into second place on the SBL ladder behind leaders Willetton (9-3).

A monstrous dunk from tall Cougar Christian Cavanaugh closed the margin to two points in the final quarter before Daniel Thomas took over against his former team.

The fiery point guard hit a three pointer and then an off balance two to put the Buccs up seven in the final two minutes.

The home side then sealed the victory from the free throw line — securing eight of nine from the charity stripe in the final quarter.

Ryan Zamroz held the brunt of the workload again with a game-high 28 points and eight assists.

Evans highlighted that the team does rely heavily on Zamroz’s influence. He said they would all need to pitch in to overcome Perth Redbacks at home on Saturday.

“We need contributions from the whole team or we’re not going to go far in finals.”

Thomas finished the night with a double-double with 11 assists and 18-points.

Ben Pepper accrued 15- points and four rebounds in his first home appearance for the Buccs since 1995.

Former Bucc Bryce Burch was glad to be back at Tip Top Stadium as he put together a 25 point performance.
