Wolves have too much bite for Hawks (Week Eight Review)

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves caused a significant upset with a 81-73 win over Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks in round eight of the women’s State Basketball League.

Youngster Alex Kerr had her best performance of the year with 18 points and Rebecca Mercer had 16 points to lead the Wolves to an important victory.

Perry Lakes lost for the first time in three games and fell to fourth despite 27 points from Dana-Renae Jones. Lakeside Lightning also caused a surprise by beating Mandurah Magic 62-50.

Sixteen-year-old Courtney Byrnes led Lakeside to victory with 23 points in an impressive shooting display, while Jessica Van Schie had eight steals.

Tarsha Fletcher top scored for the Magic with 16 points but couldn’t lead it to its first away victory of the season.

Southlands Willetton Tigers extended its winning streak to nine games and held onto top spot with a 68-50 victory over Lakeside.

Kate Malpass had 18 points while Jasmine Hooper was just two assists short of a triple-double, finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Tigers.

Byrnes again was Lakeside’s best with 20 points.

Brooke Hiddlestone and Marita Payne led Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks to an impressive 84-65 win against AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns.

Both finished with 22 points while Hiddlestone had 15 rebounds and nine assists as the Redbacks moved into fifth spot.

Melissa Moyle was Kalamunda’s best performer with 19 points and 10 rebounds but she couldn’t stop it from falling to its second loss in three games.

Kalamunda made light work of Carpet Court Southwest Slammers the previous night, winning 59-38.

Moyle again top scored with 20 points while no Slammers player had more than seven.

Rockingham Flames were equally convincing over Southwest as it won 84-54.

Kaye Tucker led the Flames to its third straight win with 29 points, while Stephanie Waycott had 10 for the winless Slammers.

Mandurah thrashed ATD Stirling Senators 88-50.

The Magic were never troubled, leading 50-23 at half-time before slowing down, with Casey Mihovilovich the star with 33 points.

Michelle Joy top scored for the Senators with six points but couldn’t stop it from losing its sixth straight.
