Tigers pounce for top spot (Week Eight Wrap)

Southlands Willetton Tigers moved into top spot with a 69-62 win over Lakeside Lightning in round eight of the men’s State Basketball League.

Willetton overtook Lakeside, which fell to fourth, thanks to the dominant performance of forward Mark Jones, who had 33 points.

The Tigers were without star centre Daniel Johnson, but Cam Tovey (19 points, nine rebounds) and Ty Shaw (22 rebounds, six assists) stepped up in his absence.

The Lightning lost for the second time in three games despite Ben Beran’s 14 points and nine rebounds.

Lakeside was more convincing the night before as it beat Mandurah Magic 118-72.

Beran top scored for the victors with 35 points while Tom Remerswaal had 15 points for Mandurah, which fell to 13th.

SKILLED Goldfields Giants beat Australian Central East Perth Eagles in a 91-88 thriller.

Goldfields recovered from an eight point half-time deficit to claim its fifth straight win and move to third spot, with Jimmy Bowler (19 points) and Lordan Franich (17 points, 13 rebounds) the top contributors.

Sam Harris top scored for the Eagles with 19 but fouled out after just 24 minutes on the court.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks ended AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns’ impressive run with a 98-89 victory.

Jon Meriweather again missed with a hamstring problem for the Redbacks but Jarrad Prior and Jesse Wagstaff stepped up with 25 and 23 points respectively.

Adrian Majstrovich had 36 points and 18 rebounds for the Suns.

Kalamunda fared better the night before by beating Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 110-88.

Majstrovich had a triple-double with 25 points, 19 rebounds and 10 assists to lead the Suns to its third straight victory while Ryan Smith and David Clarkson had 21 points each for Southwest.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks recorded its fourth straight loss, falling 82-121 to Titan Interactive Wanneroo Wolves.

Ben Purser (26 points) was Perry Lakes’ best performer Bobby Kempf played for the first time in over a month and had 12 points from 21 minutes.

Seb Salinas led the Wolves to its fourth win in five games with 39 points.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers moved into second with a 105-95 win over Cockburn Cougars.

Ryan Zamroz was Geraldton’s best with 28 points while Christian Cavanaugh top scored for the Cougars with 27.

ATD Stirling Senators ended a two game losing streak with a 90-82 win over Mandurah.

Ed Morris Jr was in great touch for Stirling with 26 points and 17 rebounds while Andrew Bowman led the Magic with 24 points.

Rockingham Flames trailed at quarter-time but came back to beat Southwest 101-83.

Import Demetrious Hazel had 23 points from just 28 minutes in his second game for Rockingham to lead it to its second straight win, while the Slammers are still winless despite Nathan Van Dijk’s 32 points.
