Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks men’s team lost a thrilling State Basketball League game against the Geraldton Buccaneers in Geraldton 101 to 104.

The game was a see-saw affair in which the lead changed 28 times and at no time did either team lead by more than eight points. It came down to the last six seconds in which Redbacks’ forward Jon Meriweather had two points disallowed after being called for a hotly disputed charging foul.

Meriweather demonstrated that he has fully overcome his four game absences due to injury by being the game-high scorer with 33 points along with 16 rebounds and three blocked shots. Perth Wildcat Jesse Wagstaff was the Redbacks’ next highest scorer with 16 points along with eight rebounds. Veteran shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 13 points at a field goal percentage of 50.

Redbacks’ point guard Joel Wagner had 14 assists along with seven rebounds and 10 points while shooting guard Jarrad Prior had 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and one blocked shot. Tough Centre Daniel Maddox also scored 10 points along with seven rebounds and one blocked shot.

Despite being aggressively defended and held to a field goal percentage of 36, in-form shooting guard Ryan Zamroz was still the Buccaneers top-scorer with 30 points along with seven rebounds and four assists. Forward Brian Connolly was their next highest scorer with 25 points at a strong field goal percentage of 63 along with 11 rebounds.

Former National Basketball League player and US National Basketball Association draft pick Ben Pepper was the Buccaneers next highest scorer on 19 points at a strong field goal percentage of 73.

The Redbacks next games are on Saturday night against the Lakeside Lightning at the Belmont Oasis Leisure Centre. The women’s game starts at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
