Hawks hold off Eagles - Week Nine WSBL Wrap

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks held off an Australian Central East Perth Eagles fight back to win 55-49 in round nine of the women’s State Basketball League.

Perry Lakes led by more than 20 late in the second quarter but were outscored 34-21 in the second half and came close to throwing away its massive lead.

Lyndal Gardner led the Hawks with 16 points while Ashley Gilmore was East Perth’s best with 19 points and 15 rebounds in its first home loss of the season.

Perry Lakes weren’t as successful the next night when it lost 69-92 to Southlands Willetton Tigers.

Kate Malpass was outstanding for the Tigers with 24 points and seven rebounds while Melissa Marsh, Jasmine Hooper and Brittany Morgan all reached double digits in points.

Dana-Renae Jones was Perry Lakes’ top scorer with 19 points.

East Perth beat Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars 72-57 to stay in second spot.

The Eagles trailed by nine after one quarter but dominated from that point, with Kelsey Maffin (20 points, nine rebounds) its best performer and Leigh Calderwood (15 points) Cockburn’s top scorer.

Casey Mihovilovich led Mandurah Magic to a 80-68 victory over AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns with 25 points, 10 rebounds and five assists.

Melissa Moyle was impressive in a losing effort for Kalamunda with 20 points.

Rockingham Flames comfortably defeated ATD Stirling Senators 76-60.

Kaye Tucker had a big game for the Flames with 26 points and 14 rebounds while Michelle Joy top scored for Stirling with 25.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves continued Carpet Court Southwest Slammers winless season with a 75-52 win.

Rebecca Mercer and Meghan D’Arcy were both impressive with 16 points for the Wolves while Elizabeth Lennox was gallant in defeat with 13 points and 19 boards.
