Redbacks face in-form Lightning

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s team faces an in-form Lakeside Lightning in tomorrow night’s State Basketball League game. The sixth-placed Redbacks will be looking to preserve the record as the only team in the men’s competition to be unbeaten at a home venue.

They will be looking to reverse their dramatic three-point away loss to the Geraldton Buccaneers following a titanic tussle last weekend. However, this will be a tough assignment with the third placed Lightning coming off a confidence-boosting win in their away game against the Kalgoorlie Giants.

This game will ultimately be decided by the outcome of the high-quality matchups. This includes the Redbacks’ point-guard Joel Wagner pitted against Lakeside’s Ryan Sofoulis, shooting guards Jarrad Prior and Ryan Neill against Luke Payne and Chris Sofoulis, forwards Jon Meriweather along with Jesse Wagstaff against Ben Beran and centre Daniel Meriweather against Jarrad Prue.

Both the sixth-placed Redbacks’ and ninth-placed Lightning’s women’s teams are back in action after each having had byes last week. Lightning are clearly a much improved team this year. This improvement has been partly as a result of the effective blend of young players and experience. This includes 17-year-old young-gun Courtney Byrnes, who has had a major impact on the league this year as Lightning’s top-scorer with 114 points.

The Redbacks will be relying on the continued dominance of their big-player combination of Brooke Hiddlestone and Marita Payne, along with the strong-defensive guard combination of Yasmin Lewis, Kerise Delcoure to secure the win.

Tip-off for the women’s game is 6.00PM and the men’s game at 8.00PM at the Belmont Oasis Stadium, corner Alexander and Abernethy Roads Belmont.
