Wolves dent Suns finals hopes (Friday Night Wrap)

Wanneroo Wolves put a massive dent in Kalamunda Eastern Suns’ finals hopes with a thrilling 82-80 victory in the men’s State Basketball League on Friday night.

The Suns led by three with two minutes remaining but Zachary Coverstone, who had 28 points, gave Wanneroo the lead when he hit a field goal with 12 seconds remaining.

Adrian Majstrovich, who finished with 38 points, missed a shot in the final second that would have won Kalamunda the game.

Kalamunda is now four games out of the top eight in the loss column while Wanneroo moved to sixth with its third straight win.

Mandurah Magic overran local rivals Rockingham Flames in the final minutes to claim a 108-99 win.

Rockingham led with nine minutes remaining but Casey Crevelone (29 points, 15 rebounds) and Andrew Bowman (23 points) helped the Magic to an improbable victory.

Lakeside Lightning beat Cockburn Cougars 106-95 in the southern suburbs derby, with Luke Payne leading the victors with 32 points.

Christian Cavanaugh had 31 points and 13 rebounds for Cockburn but couldn’t stop it falling to its fifth straight loss.

Willetton Tigers thrashed Southwest Slammers 90-54 to win its fifth straight, with Daniel Johnson (29 points) and recent Perth Wildcats signing Cameron Tovey (nine assists) leading the way for Willetton.

In the women’s games, import Heidi McNeill led Lakeside to a 48-47 win over Cockburn with 20 points and 11 rebounds.

Rockingham held on to defeat Mandurah 67-63, Kalamunda upset Wanneroo with a 70-57 win and Willetton beat Southwest 69-55.
