Giants bounce back (Saturday Night Wrap)

Goldfields Giants bounced back from a disappointing loss last round to beat Mandurah Magic 102-96 in the men’s State Basketball League.

Michael Haney and Matthew Leske led the Giants in an impressive performance with 24 points each while Mandurah’s two game winning streak came to an end despite Ben Caporn’s 20 points.

Goldfields led by just one point with four minutes remaining but outshot the Magic in the final minutes to claim an important victory.

Luke Payne led Lakeside Lightning to a 112-95 win over Perth Redbacks with 46 points.

Jarrad Prue (30 rebounds) was also important as Lakeside held onto second spot, while Jon Meriweather had 25 points and 12 rebounds for Perth as it lost for the fourth time in six games.

Stirling Senators knocked off Cockburn 106-82 despite the absence of star players Joe-Alan Tupaea and Geordie Cullen.

Carmichael Olowoyo led the Senators with 40 points while Christian Cavanuagh had 22 for Cockburn but it wasn’t enough to stop it losing its sixth straight.

East Perth Eagles claimed its third straight win as it beat Rockingham Flames 102-93, led by former Perth Wildcats centre Sam Harris, who had 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Former NBL star Ben Pepper finished with 28 points to lead Geraldton Buccaneers to a 98-78 win over Wanneroo Wolves.

Perry Lakes Hawks thrashed Southwest Slammers 113-83 to end a six game losing streak, with Jesse Dixon (26 points, nine rebounds) leading the way for the victors.

In the women’s SBL, Lakeside moved into the top eight with a 68-60 win over Perth, Rockingham defeated East Perth 78-67, Southwest were gallant but were beaten 70-65 by Perry Lakes and Cockburn beat Stirling 62-47.
