Hawks surge past Giants

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks upset SKILLED Goldfields Giants 109-90 to move back into finals contention in round 10 of the men’s State Basketball League.

Perry Lakes held off a fourth quarter comeback from Goldfields and overran its opponents in the final minutes to claim its second straight win and climb to within one game of the top eight.

Hawks coach Dion Dagostino said the result was encouraging and showed his side is dangerous.

“I think we can make the eight and definitely surprise people. There’s no one we’ve played that we can’t beat and there’s no one we’re scared of playing,” he said.

Perry Lakes seemed to be in control of the match when it led by 14 late in the third quarter, but Goldfields fought back to cut the margin to three with just over five minutes remaining before the Hawks regained control.

NBL guard Peter Crawford led the Hawks to victory with 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals while Ben Purser (20 points and eight rebounds) and Robert Kempf (19 points and 17 rebounds) also performed strongly.

John Vaudreuil led Goldfields with 23 points and seven rebounds while Ryan Hulme had 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists.

The Giants shot just 40 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from the free-throw line as it fell to its second loss in three games and to fifth on the standings.

Dagostino said he was happy with his side’s improvement over the last few weeks.

“We’ve been riddled with injuries and even today we didn’t have Sam Keene or Martin Vahala, so it was awesome we realised we were able to win,” he said.

“We’ve changed a lot of our training tactics, we’ve gone back to teaching a lot and we’ve started getting the results, which is great.”
