Redbacks home streak ends

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s team’s record as the only unbeaten side at home was broken on Saturday night by Lakeside Lightning.

The third placed Lightning beat the Redbacks 112 to 95. The Redbacks’ top scorer was forward Jon Meriweather with 25 points along with 12 rebounds and two steals. Jesse Wagstaff was their next highest scorer with 22 points along with nine rebounds, while point guard Joel Wagner had 14 assists along with 15 points.

The Redbacks could not counter Lightning’s US import and forward Ben Beran, who was the game-high scorer with 46 points at a strong field goal percentage of 67 along with 12 rebounds. He was ably supported by Jarrad Prue who brought down 30 rebounds along with eight points and Luke Payne who scored 20 points.

The loss was costly for the Redbacks as they slip one place down the ladder to seventh in the 14-team competition with seven wins and six losses.

The Redbacks’ women’s team also lost to Lightning 60 to 68. Forward Marita Payne and shooting guard Kerise Delcoure both scored 13 points for the Redbacks. Payne also brought down nine rebounds along with two assists while Delcoure had two steals and one assist.

However, they could not counter the Lightning’s spread of scorers that included 17-year-old young-gun Courtney Byrnes along with Courtney Bayliss and Jess Van Schie who scored 19, 13 and 12 points respectively. They were also ably supported by centre Heidi McNeill who brought down 16 rebounds along with scoring 10 points.

The Redbacks’ women’s team remains in sixth place in the 12-team competition with six wins and five losses.

Both the Redbacks’ teams will be looking to reverse last weekend’s results in their next games against the Wanneroo Wolves this Friday night at the Belmont Oasis Stadium. The women’s game tips of at 6.30PM and the men’s game at 8.30PM.
