Tigers set the pace

For the fourth straight round, the Southlands Willetton Tigers Men and Women have shared a successful weekend with both teams triumphant over the visiting Southwest Slammers.

Despite the absence of Perth Lynx combo Kate Malpass and Emma Lobb the Tigers Women went in still very much the favourites after handing the 0-13 Slammers a 59 point annihilation in Eaton earlier this year.

The Slammers showed their determination to make amends for week 6 putting in a solid effort to stay within 9 points of the depleted Tigers at the half.

The Tigers broke away in the third to take a command of the game as the full roster began to see minutes.

The hungry Slammers rallied together to lead the fourth quarter but their search for their first win of the season will continue as the Tigers Women wrapped up their eleventh consecutive victory 69-55.

Captain Melissa Marsh (18 pts, 8 rebs, 5 assts) led the way for the Tigers with young guard Jasmine Hooper not far behind (15 pts, 7 rebs, 5 assts).

The success of the Tigers Woman carried into the men’s game as the Tigers Men took their fifth straight win downing the Slammers by 36 points.

The game looked to go south for the Slammers quickly as the Tigers took a 25-8 stand on the first quarter.

The winless Slammers regrouped to cut the margin to as little as 6 points just before the half but the depth of the top of the table Tigers was too much as they pulled away to win 90-54.

The Tigers inside presence had a field day with centre Daniel Johnson posting 29 points whilst power forward Ty Shaw hauled in 23 rebounds.

Both the Tigers Men and Women will face perhaps their biggest tests of the season with a tough double header this weekend.

For the Men it will come on Friday night away against the defending champions Lakeside Lightning who will be out for revenge after they were upset by a very undermanned Tigers roster earlier this season.

Saturday night will see the Tigers Women battle to keep their hot streak alive at home against the fellow title contending Rockingham Flames.
