Buccs defence at its best

Ray Evans said his side’s defence was the catalyst to their two victories during their round 10 road trip. “It was the best defence we have played all year,” said the Geraldton Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers coach.

The Buccs produced a stellar team defence to tame the Wanneroo Wolves 98-78 on Saturday as they held Wanneroo to 36 per cent from the field.

Evans was extremely pleased with the way his side shut down the Wolves’ offensive options.

“We did a really good job on everyone, even (Seb) Selinas, he scored a few points late that bumped up his stats a bit.”

Wolves’ star Salinas was the only offensive contributor with 21-points for the game.

Ben Pepper was the main destroyer on the offensive end as he finished with 28-points and nine rebounds.

Evans was pleased that Pepper took the scoring load off Zamroz.

“We have different options, Pepper played well and even Aaron Ralph stepped up,” he said.

Guard Ryan Zamroz with 19 points on a seven from 17 shooting night was the next best while Matt Wundenberg snatched 12 rebounds to go with his 12-points.

Evans’ men backed up their Saturday night performance with a comprehensive 109-94 win over Stirling yesterday.

Evans was impressed by the way his side were able to re-group after a slow start.

“Our intensity wasn’t there at the start, we had a decent start but were just a little slow,” he said.

After being out scored by seven in the second quarter and relinquishing the lead, the Buccs proceeded to score 58 second half points to 41.

After his lowest scoring output of the year on Saturday night, Zamroz exploded for 36 points against the Senators.

Evans attributed the victory to the dominance by his big men.

“We have a tall team and should win the rebounding every week,” he said.

The big guys down low for the Buccs were dominant on the glass as they out rebounded the Senators 49-34.
