Giants stumble against Hawks

The SKILLED Goldfields Giants rounded out their weekend State Basketball League road trip on Sunday with a loss to the Perry Lakes Hawks.

The local combination mounted a revival in the last quarter, but the Hawks controlled the remaining minutes to win by 19 points, 109-90.

It was essentially a case of too little, too late for the Giants, who had trailed by 14 points late in the third quarter.

That advantage was later reduced to just three points with just over five minutes remaining in the game. However, Perry Lakes surged to the final buzzer with NBL guard Peter Crawford impressive for the winners in racking up 29 points, 10 rebounds, eight assists and five steals.

For the Giants, John Vaudreuil led the way in a losing effort with 23 points and seven rebounds. The main support was provided by Ryan Hulme (19 points, nine rebounds, five assists).

Goldfields’ hopes were spoiled by an inability to apply enough scoreboard pressure – shooting just 40 per cent from the field and 50 per cent from the free-throw line en route to the club’s second loss in three games.

Following the latest round, the Giants occupy fifth position in the standings – behind the Willetton Tigers, Geraldton Buccaneers, Lakeside Lightning and East Perth Eagles.

The Giants will be looking to return to something of their best form when they take on the Kalamunda Eastern Suns at the Brookman Street Stadium on Saturday night.

Goldfields will also be at home against the Cockburn Cougars on May 29 before embarking on the club’s toughest road trip of the season, encompassing three games in as many days during the June long weekend.
