Redbacks lead the pack

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s and women’s State Basketball League teams had two strong wins last night against the Wanneroo Wolves.

In a dominant performance the Redbacks’ men’s team won 116 to 83 at their home-game venue of Belmont Oasis Recreation Centre. The 36-point margin was important as it now means they have the head to head scoring advantage over the Wolves after taking into account their 17-point loss to them in round six.

This means that if the two teams end up on equal wins and losses at the end of the season’s qualifying rounds, the Redbacks take the higher spot on the ladder.

Forward Jon ‘excitement machine’ Meriweather again displayed an amazing array of dunks and blocks in scoring a game-high 36 points. This was achieved at a field goal percentage of 87 after making 15 out of 17 shots. Meriweather also had 15 rebounds, three assists and three blocked shots.

The Redbacks’ shooting guard combination of Jarrad Prior and Ryan Neill were the next highest scorers with 14 points each in a combined court-time of only 44 minutes. The remainder of their statistics were also almost a mirror image with each having a field goal percentage of 50 from 10 shots and two rebounds, with Prior also having three assists and one steal and Neill also having two assists and one blocked shot.

Centre Michael Vigor scored 12 point at 83% along with five rebounds and one steal, while fellow centre Daniel Maddox also scored 12 points at 71% along with six rebounds, one assist and one blocked shot. 18-year-old young-gun Robert Cassir continued his season-long strong form with eight points along with seven rebounds in just 19 minutes on the court, while point guard Joel Wagner scored six points along with four assists and one steal.

The win sees the Redbacks move up one place to sixth in the 14-team competition with a season record of eight wins and six losses.

The Redbacks’ women’s team beat the Wolves 70 to 56. Redbacks’ forward Brooke Hiddlestone was their game-high scorer with 23 points along with 12 rebounds, three assists and one steal. Centre Marita Payne scored 17 points as well as 12 rebounds, three blocked-shots and one assist.

Shooting guard Narelle Henry scored 12 points along with seven assists, two rebounds and one blocked-shot while forward Frances Clarke scored 10 points along with six rebounds, two steals, and one blocked-shot. Kerise Delcoure had four points along with three assists and three steals.

As a result of the win the Redbacks’ women’s team has moved from seventh to sixth-place in the twelve-team competition with seven wins and five losses.

Both Redbacks’ teams will be looking to continue their good form and movements up the league ladder when they play the Cockburn Cougars tonight at the Wally Hagen Stadium, Starling Street Hamilton Hill. The women’s game starts at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
