Tigers come crashing down (Week Eleven Review)

Southlands Willetton Tigers’ reign at the top of the ladder came to an end with two losses in round 11 of the women’s State Basketball League.

Willetton entered the round having won 11 straight but lost 77-67 to Lakeside Lightning and 71-69 to Rockingham Flames, which takes top spot.

Courtney Bayliss led Lakeside to its shock win with 17 points from just 16 minutes, while Kate Malpass top-scored for the Tigers with 16.

Rockingham won its seventh straight and bumped Willetton off the league lead thanks to Kaye Tucker (20 points, 14 rebounds) and Courtney Hargraves (16 points), while Malpass again led the Tigers with 23.

ATD Stirling Senators caused the upset of the round and claimed its second victory of the season with a 91-86 win against Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks.

Michelle Joy and Emily Fielding combined for nearly two-thirds of the Senators’ points with 32 and 28 respectively, while Tegan Walker had 27 for the Hawks.

Perry Lakes thrashed Australian Central East Perth Eagles 87-52 the previous night, making its loss to Stirling even more shocking.

The Hawks led 57-18 at half-time and held on for a comfortable win with Dana-Renae Jones top-scoring for it with 17, while Ashley Gilmore had 16 for East Perth.

East Perth bounced back to beat Lakeside 64-49 the next night and hold onto third spot, led by Samantha Norwood (19 points).

Courtney Byrnes was the only Lakeside player to reach double figures, finishing with 11 points as her side fell to its first loss in four games.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks won both games of a tough double header, beating Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves 70-56 and Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars 74-63.

Brooke Hiddlestone led the Redbacks with 19 points against Wanneroo while Rebecca Mercer top-scored for the Wolves with 18.

Hiddlestone was again in great form against the Cougars, finishing with 22 points and seven rebounds, while Laura Cowling (15 points) was Cockburn’s best.

Wanneroo ended a two game losing streak with a 76-67 win over Mandurah Magic.

Alex Kerr led the Wolves with 21 points while Casey Mihovilovich had 21 for the Magic as it fell to its second straight loss.
