Joy takes first Player of Week

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks centre Jon Meriweather and ATD Stirling Senators star Michelle Joy have claimed the PowerPlayer of the Week awards for round 11 of the State Basketball League.

Both will receive $50 vouchers to PowerPlay Sports in Subiaco after their excellent performances last weekend.

Meriweather led Perth to a 116-83 win over Wanneroo Friday night before another strong performance in its 116-105 win at Cockburn the next night, moving it up to fifth on the ladder.

He had 36 points and 15 rebounds from just 28 minutes for the Wolves, backing it up with 38 points and seven boards against the Cougars.

The American big man is averaging 29.5 points and 10.3 rebound per game from 10 games this year and was sorely missed by the Redbacks during a month-long absence with a hamstring injury.

Also in contention for the men’s award was Lakeside Lightning guard Luke Payne, who had 39 points in his side’s win 104-93 win over Willetton and 13 the next night in its 85-76 win at East Perth.

Joy had 32 points and 11 rebounds in Stirling’s shock 91-86 win over Perry Lakes, shooting 59 per cent from the field and 10 from 10 from the free-throw line.

Stirling claimed its second win of a tough season on the back of Joy’s performance, continuing her excellent form for the club.

Joy is averaging 17.8 points and 11.4 rebounds per game for the Senators this season.

Perth centre Brooke Hiddlestone was also in contention, after she had 19 points and 12 rebounds in its win over Wanneroo and 22 points as the Redbacks beat Cockburn the next night.
