Redbacks wary of Slammers

The Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks face two potentially dangerous away-games against the Southwest Slammers in the State Basketball League this Saturday night.

Despite the fact that both Slammers’ women’s and men’s teams are winless and at the bottom of the ladder they have young, developing teams that continually threaten their opposition and are destined for wins shortly.

The Redbacks’ women’s team, which is currently in fifth-place, will be looking for continued dominant performances from their tall-timbers of Marita Payne and Brooke Hiddlestone. They will also be looking to combine this with strong defensive efforts from their tough guard combination that includes Kerise Delcoure, Yasmin Seden and Narelle Henry to secure a win.

All players will need to perform at their best to counter the impact of the 12th-placed Slammers’ Kate Fielding, Stephanie Waycott and Danika Pisconeri who are this season averaging 14, nine and eight points per game respectively.

As demonstrated in their narrow away-game two-point loss to the Cockburn Cougars, the 14th-placed Slammers’ men’s team can be a threat to any other team in the league on their day. The fifth-placed Redbacks will need be on their guard to counter new Slammers import Jason Miller.

They will also need to negate the potential impact of promising young-guard Nathan Van Dijk, who has been averaging just over 10 points per game.

The Redbacks will be looking for continued strong efforts from guards Joel Wagner, Jarrad Prior and Ryan Neill, forwards Jesse Wagstaff and Jon Meriweather and centres Daniel Maddox and Michael Vigor to secure a win.

There will be a small contingent of Redbacks’ fans travelling down to the Eaton Basketball Stadium, 18 Recreation Drive Eaton to watch the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game starting at 8PM.
