Buccs stumble but stay on top (Mens Wrap)

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers recovered from a 98-94 loss to Lakeside Lightning to end the round in first place in the men’s State Basketball League.

Geraldton dropped to third after that loss, behind Southlands Willetton Tigers and Lakeside, but drew level with the Tigers after beating Rockingham Flames 104-98 and moved one win ahead with a 122-94 win over Cockburn Cougars in the final game of its road-trip.

Ryan Zamroz was the star of the trip for Geraldton, averaging over 24 points and five assists over the three games.

Luke Payne (26 points) led Lakeside to its win over the Buccaneers, which saw it finish the weekend equal in losses with Geraldton and Willetton, but two wins behind first place in third with two games in hand.

Willetton beat SKILLED Goldfields Giants 99-90 to keep its place in the top two.

NBL duo Daniel Johnson and Cameron Tovey had 27 and 25 points respectively for Willetton, while John Vaudreuil top-scored for the Giants with 23.

Goldfields fared better in the rest of its road-trip, surviving a scare to beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 93-90 before beating Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks 116-109.

The Giants trailed by six at half-time against the Slammers but Todd Earle (20 points) led its comeback, with Southwest import Jason Miller falling short of leading his new side to its first win of the season with 28 points.

Goldfields strengthened its grip on a top four spot against Perth with Matthew Leske (27 points) its highest scorer.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles lost to Cockburn 89-75, ending the Cougars’ eight-game losing streak and seeing East Perth drop out of the top eight with its fourth straight loss.

Bryce Burch led Cockburn with 32 points while Stephen Weigh (16 points) was East Perth’s highest scorer, but the side remains winless in games the Perth Wildcasts star has played.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks consolidated its finals spot with a 93-88 win over Perth, led by Peter Crawford’s 32 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists.

Mandurah Magic kept its postseason hopes alive with a 110-86 victory against AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns, with new import Taylor Mullenax (27 points, 11 rebounds) in great touch.

Kalamunda also fell 105-103 to ATD Stirling Senators, allowing the Senators to climb into the top eight, led by Ed Morris Jr (39 points) and Carmichael Olowoyo (34 points).

Titan Interactive Wanneroo Wolves moved one game clear of ninth spot with a 91-79 win over Rockingham, with Sebastian Salinas (22 points) best for the Wolves.
