May SBL Player & Coach Awards

Lakeside Lightning import Benjamin Beran and Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks star Marita Payne are the PowerPlayers of the Month winners for May.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers coach Ray Evans took the Coach of the Month award for the men’s competition, while Rockingham Flames coach Ryan Petrick won it for the women’s league.

All four will receive $50 vouchers to PowerPlay Sports in Subiaco as a result of their terrific achievements throughout May.

Beran has established himself as one of the best players in the league this season, averaging 27 points and 7.8 rebounds per game across the 2010 campaign.

His performances in May were spectacular, averaging 26.7 points per game over the month to lead his side to a 5-2 record in May and third place in the league.

Payne has been a revelation for the Redbacks since joining the team in late April, averaging 19.6 points and 11.9 rebounds per game and providing much needed support to fellow front court star Brooke Hiddlestone.

The former Australian Opals player averaged 19.6 points and 10.4 rebounds in five games in May, leading the Redbacks to a 4-1 record in the month.

Geraldton’s position on top of the men’s SBL is down at least in part to Evans, who has admirably guided it to a great season, with it among the championship favourites.

The Buccaneers were 6-0 in May under Evans’ watch, with the highlights a thrilling 104-101 home win over Perth in round nine and an impressive 98-78 victory at Wanneroo the next week.

Petrick has done an outstanding job with Rockingham, leading it to second place in the league, with it behind league leaders Willetton on percentage only.

The Flames went 6-1 in May under his watch, with its 73-69 defeat at Kalamunda at the end of the month the only slip up for one of the title favourites in the month.
