Lightning look to strike against Hawks (Mens Previews)

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks host Lakeside Lightning in one of the best matches in a great weekend of men’s State Basketball League action.

Both sides will be desperate for a win, with Lakeside trying to maintain the pressure on league leaders Geraldton and Willetton, while Perry Lakes will be looking to extend its six-game winning streak and consolidate its finals spot.

The game could be decided in the battle between Perry Lakes star Peter Crawford and Lakeside import Luke Payne, with the two shooting guards both key players.

The Hawks travel to Cockburn Cougars in the first game of a doubleheader the night before and will start heavy favourite, with the Cougars out of finals contention despite ending its eight-game losing streak last week.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles will be desperate to end its four-game losing streak and get its year back on track when it meets Titan Interactive Wanneroo Wolves.

Wanneroo will be favourite with it having won its last two and two wins clear of the ninth placed Eagles in seventh spot, having played an extra game.

East Perth’s task will be made much tougher with Steven Weigh and Damian Martin expected to miss due to an Australian Boomers training camp, but Sam Harris is expected to return.

The Eagles also travel to face Southlands Willetton Tigers on Saturday, completing a tough doubleheader.

Willetton briefly led the league last weekend but fell back to second after Geraldton win its two extra games, but the Tigers should be good enough to keep up the pressure on the Buccaneers.

Wanneroo should boost its top eight chances with a comfortable win at Cockburn, with the Cougars not having won at home since mid-April.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks will have to overcome injury concerns to beat in-form side Mandurah Magic in Waroona, with Mandurah needing to win to stay in finals contention.

Jon Meriweather has an ankle injury that has kept him out of Perth’s last three games while former Wildcats development player Jarrad Prior may be out for several weeks with torn ankle ligaments.

Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers will remain on top of the league after its impressive road-trip last week if it can extend AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns’ eight-game losing streak.

Kalamunda import Kenny Brunner is believed to be out for the season while Adrian Majstrovich missed the Suns’ second game last weekend and will have to return for his side to have any chance this week.

ATD Stirling Senators will be trying to hold onto its top eight place by beating Carpet Court Southwest Slammers, which narrowly fell short of its first win of the year last week.

Rockingham Flames have fallen out of finals contention and will struggle at SKILLED Goldfields Giants, with the Giants desperate to win to consolidate its top four spot.
