Eagles back on track (Friday night wrap)

East Perth Eagles ended its four-game losing streak and boosted its top eight hopes with a 113-91 win over Wanneroo Wolves in the men’s State Basketball League.

The Eagles bumped Wanneroo out of the eight on percentage with a dominant first-half performance which saw it lead by 25 late in the second quarter and remain in control throughout.

Perth Wildcats star Steven Weigh top-scored for the Eagles with 27 points while centre Tom Jervis added 17 points, 16 rebounds and seven blocks.

East Perth were able to limit Wanneroo guard Sebastian Salinas to 13 points, with Zachary Coverstone (20 points) its top-scorer as its two-game winning streak ended.

The Wolves have been in the eight since round seven but fell out after losing four of its last six matches.

Perry Lakes Hawks extended its winning streak to seven games with a 113-99 win against Cockburn Cougars.

Cockburn led shortly after half-time but Perry Lakes finished the third period on a 21-6 run to ensure a comfortable victory and move up to fifth place.

Peter Crawford was in great form for the Hawks with 29 points while Robert Kempf (25 points, 11 rebounds) and Ben Purser (22 points, 10 rebounds) also put up good performances.

Christian Cavanuagh had 26 points and Bryce Burch added 23 for the Cougars but it wasn’t enough to prevent it losing for the 10th time in 11 games and falling to four games outside the top eight.

In women’s action, Wanneroo caused a surprise with an 86-81 win over East Perth, led by Rebecca Mercer’s 26 points.

Perry Lakes survived a scare to pick up its third straight win with a 78-75 victory against Cockburn, with Dana-Renae Jones (19 points) top-scoring for the Hawks.
