Malpass keeps Tigers on top (Womens Review)

Southlands Willetton Tigers are likely to finish the women’s State Basketball League in first place after beating Rockingham Flames 75-66.

Willetton has one fewer loss than Rockingham despite having played a game more, and with favourable matchups in its last five games, should be able to hold onto top spot entering the finals.

The Tigers trailed by six midway through the third quarter but dominated the last period, with Kate Malpass, who finished with 23 points and 12 rebounds leading its comeback.

Casey Haggar had 18 points to top-score for Rockingham in its second loss in four games.

Lakeside Lightning took a big step towards a top eight finish with wins over Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks and Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars.

Heidi McNeill had 16 points and nine rebounds to lead Lakeside to an impressive 56-50 home win over Perth, with Marita Payne’s 24 points not enough to stop the Redbacks falling out of the top four.

McNeill was again in great touch with 23 points and 10 rebounds as Lakeside beat local rivals Cockburn 64-53, while Sam O’Neill had 14 points for the Cougars in its fifth straight loss.

The Lightning moved two games clear of ninth placed AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns, which lost 75-49 to Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

Samantha Norwood (19 points, 14 rebounds) was East Perth’s best as it ended its two-game losing streak and consolidated third spot, while Chantel Foord (10 points) was the only Kalamunda player to reach double figures.

Mandurah Magic moved up to sixth after beating Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves in a 73-71 thriller.

The Magic trailed by eight with less than eight minutes left but fought back to tie the scores with two minutes remaining, before Casey Mihovilovich hit the winning shot in the final 10 seconds.

Mihovilovich finished with 21 to lead the Magic while Rebecca Mercer top-scored with 19 for Wanneroo, which fell to seventh.

Mandurah also beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 68-57 the night before, led by Shelley Boston (15 points, 10 rebounds).

Kate Fielding top-scored with 20 for Southwest, which is just six losses away from a winless season.
