Weigh stars to keep finals alive (Saturday Wrap)

Perth Wildcats star Steven Weigh kept East Perth Eagles in contention for a men’s State Basketball League finals spot by leading it to an upset 89-78 victory over Perth Redbacks.

Just two days after he was surprisingly cut from the Australian Boomers squad, Weigh had 40 points and 11 rebounds to help East Perth move to just one loss outside the top eight, despite having won just two of its last seven.

Veteran Ryan Neil top-scored with 31 points for Perth, which dropped out of the top four. 

Geraldton Buccaneers recovered from a shock defeat to Perth on Friday night with a 96-78 win over country rivals Goldfields Giants.

Former NBL centre Ben Pepper was dominant for Geraldton with 24 points and 22 rebounds, while John Vaudreuil top-scored for Goldfields with 15 points in his side’s third straight loss.

Willetton Tigers stayed in top spot with a 119-93 defeat of Mandurah Magic, Willetton’s seventh straight win.

Daniel Johnson had 29 points to ensure the Tigers stayed one win clear of second placed Geraldton.

Lakeside Lightning stayed in contention for a top two spot after beating Stirling 95-88 in a big blow to the Senators’ top eight hopes.

Luke Payne led Lakeside with 27 while Ed Morris Jr had 36 points for the Senators.

Wanneroo Wolves thrashed Southwest Slammers 105-80 on the back of an impressive effort from Greg Hire (25 points, 14 rebounds), taking it up to equal fourth spot.

In women’s action, Willetton survived a late scare to beat Mandurah 71-68, Perth upset East Perth 61-44, Stirling shocked Lakeside with a 50-46 victory and Wanneroo beat Southwest 77-57.
