Eagles clip Redbacks from top four

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s team had a thrilling 104 to 102 home-game win over the top-placed Geraldton Buccaneers in Friday night’s State Basketball League.

The result was in the balance until the last three-seconds when the Redbacks’ centre Daniel Maddox blocked a shot by the Buccaneers Brian Connolly.

Perth Wildcat Jesse Wagstaff top-scored for the Redbacks with 33 along with 15 rebounds, four blocked shots, three assists.

401-game veteran Ryan Neill had 32, including the last score of the game that saw the Redbacks take the lead, along with three assists, two steals and two rebounds.

The Redbacks could not follow this up with a win in their second game on Saturday night, losing to the East Perth Eagles 78 to 89.

Eagles and Perth Wildcats player Stephen Weigh was the game-high scorer with 40 along with 11 rebounds.

The Redbacks’ top-scorer for this game was Neill with 31 along with six rebounds.

Wagstaff was their next highest scorer with 22 along with 11 rebounds and two steals.

The Redbacks’ men now have 13 wins and 9 losses and remain in fifth place in the 14-team competition.

In their only game for the weekend the Redbacks’ women’s team had a strong 61 to 44 win against the third placed East Perth Eagles.

Centre Marita Payne top-scored for the Redbacks with 19 along with 11 rebounds, eight blocked shots, five steals and two assists.

Power-forward Brooke Hiddlestone scored nine along with 15 rebounds while small-forward Martine Pearman had eight points, two assists and two steals.

The Redbacks women also remain in fifth place with 11 wins and seven losses.

The Redbacks next play the Stirling Senators at the Warwick Leisure Centre on Friday night, with the women’s game starting at 6.30PM and the men’s game at 8.30PM.

This is followed by a home game on Saturday night at Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre against the Southwest Slammers with the women’s game starting at 6PM and the men’s game at 8PM.
