Senators upset Lightning (Womens Review)

Lakeside Lightning blew a chance to secure a women’s State Basketball League finals spot with a 50-46 loss to ATD Stirling Senators.

Lakeside looked certain to finish the round with a top eight spot assured after beating AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns 76-44 on Friday, but Stirling kept the ninth placed Suns’ hopes alive for another week.

Emily Fielding had 15 points to lead Stirling to its fourth win of the season, while Heidi McNeill’s 14 points and 10 rebounds wasn’t enough to get Lakeside its fifth straight win.

Courtney Byrnes (19 points) and McNeill (18 points) were in great form in Lakeside’s win over the Suns, but its shock loss to Stirling means the number of Lightning wins and Suns losses combined for the Lightning to make the finals remains at two, with Lakeside having three games left and Kalamunda four.

Southlands Willetton Tigers survived a late scare to beat Mandurah Magic 71-68 in the Grand Final rematch, extending its winning streak to five games.

Kate Malpass had 21 points to help Willetton move a step closer to a first place finish, while Casey Mihovilovich was impressive in defeat for Mandurah with 15 points and five assists.

Willetton also beat Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars 62-54 the previous night, despite Emma Pass’ dominant effort of 21 points and 18 rebounds for Cockburn.

Australian Central East Perth Eagles’ poor form continued with a 61-44 loss to Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks.

East Perth’s top four place is in danger with it having lost three of four after Marita Payne (19 points, 11 rebounds) led Perth to a win that kept its top four hopes alive.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks beat Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves 66-60 to stay in fourth place.

Dana-Renae Jones had 21 points and 12 rebounds to ensure the Hawks improved to 8-2 at home.

Wanneroo bounced back to beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 77-57 the next night, guaranteeing the Wolves’ finals place.

Rockingham Flames beat Stirling 92-52 to virtually ensure a top two finish, led by Kaye Tucker (21 points, seven assists).
