Buccs strive for top spot

A WIN tomorrow night against the Willetton Tigers is essential if the Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers are to finish atop the SBL ladder at seasons end.

The Buccs enter the top of the table clash sitting in second spot, one game behind the ladder leading Tigers. Ryan Zamroz said finishing on top will give the Buccs an ideal passage through the finals.

“If we finish first we avoid the harder teams heading into the finals,” Zamroz said.

“Hopefully we will be right either way but we want to finish first.”

The only thing hanging in the balance about the top three teams is the order they will finish.

Geraldton, Willeton and Lakeside Lightning are ensured a top three finish.

The Buccs already own a 98-85 victory over the Tigers in round six.

New Wildcats recruit Cameron Tovey will be in the Willetton line-up this time around after missing the first encounter with the Buccs.

Tovey, a six foot eight guard is among a host of players capable of high rebounding numbers.

Zamroz said restricting offensive rebounds is a key.

“They have some big guys that can rebound the ball,” he said.

“We really need to keep them off the offensive glass.”

Daniel Johnson scored 34-points last time the two sides met.

Zamroz said stopping Johnson would go a long way to securing victory.

“He is a good player and he will take a lot of shots,’ he said.

“He scored a lot of points early last time but we were able to shut him down later in the game.”

The Buccs defence is the reason they currently occupy second spot on the ladder and Zamroz believes the better defensive team will win the game.

“All year it has been about our defence,” he said.

“We always score enough points to win the game and our zone is continuing to get better.

“It is good to have something other than man to man to go to.”
