Eagles suffer setback (Womens Wrap)

Australian Central East Perth Eagles’ hopes of a top four finish in the women’s State Basketball League took a massive blow with a heartbreaking 83-81 loss at Mandurah Magic.

East Perth, which had been in the top three since round three, fell to fifth with its fourth loss from its last five, while Mandurah improved to 8-1 at home.

Kelli Hayward led the Magic with 21 points and 10 assists to boost her side’s chances of a top six place, while Ashley Gilmore top-scored for East Perth with 22.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks replaced the Eagles in third spot after beating ATD Stirling Senators 69-37 and Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 75-42.

2009 MVP Brooke Hiddlestone was best for the Redbacks in both games, finishing with 21 points against Stirling and 26 against the Slammers.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks stayed in fourth spot with a 62-50 win at AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns, ending the hosts’ hopes of making the finals.

Tegan Walker (24 points, 13 rebounds) was in spectacular form for the Hawks while Chantel Foord (10 points) was the only Suns player to reach double figures.

Rockingham Flames beat Lakeside Lightning 64-52 and Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars 75-51 to move within one game of top spot.

Courtney Hargeaves (13 points) helped the Flames condemn Lakeside to its second straight loss, while Kaye Tucker (15 points, 14 rebounds) was its best performer against Cockburn.

Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves survived a scare to beat Stirling 80-77, keeping its slim hopes of a top four finish alive.

Rebecca Mercer and Shani Amos had 17 points each for Wanneroo, while Michelle Joy (35 points, 14 rebounds) was in incredible form for Stirling.
