Magic, Lightning jostle for positions (Women's Preview)

Mandurah Magic and Lakeside Lightning will be battling to get favourable finals matchups when they meet in the penultimate round of the women’s State Basketball League.

Mandurah is assured of a finals spot and eighth placed Lakeside is close to it, but both will be desperate to win to try to sneak into the top six and avoid a series with either of the top two in the first week of the finals.

The Magic will be favourites given its 8-1 home record, while Lakeside will be out to end a two-game losing streak.

Mandurah has a friendlier matchup the previous night against Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars, a side which has lost seven straight, and should win easily.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks can consolidate its top four spot if it can upset Rockingham Flames on the road.

Perth is third but faces both top two sides to finish the season and will need to beat at least one to stay in the top four, while Rockingham is almost assured of finishing second.

Southlands Willetton Tigers travel to Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves to try to extend its five-game winning streak, while Wanneroo will be trying to keep its slim top four chances alive.

Wanneroo could sneak into the top four if it wins both its games due to Perth and Perry Lakes’ tough schedules, but will struggle to get past the in-form Tigers.

East Perth has lost four of its last five to fall out of the top four but should be able to get its season back on track by beating winless side Carpet Court Southwest Slammers.

The Eagles could finish as high as third if it beats Southwest in its final game of the year, but won’t make the top four if the Slammers cause an upset.

AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns a still a mathematical chance of making the finals, but that will end if it can’t beat strugglers Cockburn and Southwest.

The Suns have lost veterans Carli Boyanich and Melissa Moyle for the season and coach Craig Mansfield will miss this round’s games, but should still be good enough to win both.
