Buccs face tough test

IF someone told Coach Ray Evans at the season launch his side would finish top three on the SBL ladder he would have taken it.

That’s the situation the Sun City Plumbing Geraldton Buccaneers enjoy with only two games remaining in the 2010 regular season.

After a 24-point loss last week the Buccs have an uphill battle to finish on top but are guaranteed a top three position.

Willetton is the hot favourite to finish top and Lakeside are set to finish second as both sides enjoy easy games heading into the finals.

The Buccs face Perry Lakes Hawks tomorrow night and Evans said his players are eager to redeem themselves.

“You could see it on their faces that the boys were disappointed after last week,” Evans said.

“All they wanted to do was get back out there and play.”

After being man handled by the physical Willetton Tigers Evans called for his players to adopt a more physical style of game.

“They pushed us out of our offence last week because they were physically strong,” he said.

“They did nothing illegal, they were just strong.

“We will face more of that in the finals and will need to come to terms with it.”

Evans said that it is not only the offensive end that must be addressed.

“All round we need to be stronger, defensively, offensively and on the glass,” he said.

The last time the Buccs met Perry Lakes, the Hawks won the game 117-110.

The Tigers were able to unlock the Buccs zone defence but Evans will stick with it in the hope of grounding the Hawks.

“Our zone did not work last week but nothing worked last week,” he said.

“We will stick with it because you do not want to change much at this late stage of the year.”

Sharp shooter Tom Witts is in doubt for the clash tomorrow night due to work commitments.

Evans said his absence will present someone else with the opportunity to step up.
