Redbacks lock in top four finish

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks' men's and women's State Basketball League teams are now guaranteed top-four finishes after strong wins on the weekend.

Despite going into the game as underdogs, the third-placed Redbacks' women's team comprehensively beat the second-placed Rockingham Flames 65 to 50 in Rockingham.

Centre Marita Payne was the Redbacks top-scorer with 21 along with 14 rebounds and three assists.

Power-forward Brooke Hiddlestone and shooting guard Narelle Henry were the next highest scorers with 13 each.

Hiddlestone also brought down 15 rebounds and four assists while Henry also had seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one blocked-shot.

The Redbacks' women now have 14 wins and seven losses and are in third place in the 12-team competition.

Depending upon the results of next week's final round of qualifying games they can end up as high as second or as low as fourth.

The Redbacks' men's team beat the Rockingham Flames 111 to 89.

Redbacks' veteran shooting guard Ryan Neill continues his stellar season in again being the game-high scorer with 26 along with four rebounds and four assists.

Small-forward Jesse Wagstaff was their next highest scorer on 18 along with nine rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots while tough-centre Daniel Maddox had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Point guard Joel Wagner scored 13 along with 11 assists while power-forward Jon Meriweather had 16 points, six rebounds and two blocked-shots.

The Redbacks' men's team now has a season record of 16 wins and nine losses and is in fourth place in the 14-team competition.

They will finish in fourth-place irrespective of the results in the final qualifying round.

In two blockbuster games this Saturday at the Belmont Oasis Leisure and Aquatic Centre the Redbacks' men's and women's teams take on the Willetton Tigers, both of whom occupy top-position.

Tip-off for the women's game is at 6PM and 8PM for the men's game.
