Buccs fly high heading into finals

THE Sun City Geraldton Buccaneers enter the SBL play-offs full of confidence after a thrilling two-point win over the East Perth Eagles.

East Perth were down by 11-points at three quarter time but hit the lead in the final two minutes of the game. That’s when Ryan Zamroz took over.

Zamroz drove to the basket for two points and then hit a clutch three-pointer to put the Buccs up four after they trailed by one point in the final minute.

The Eagles then had a chance to make it a one point game again but the ensuing three-pointer was missed and the Buccs secured the rebound and the game.

Coach Ray Evans said the game was a good dress rehearsal for the play-offs which start this weekend.

“It was a good hit out that’s for sure,” said Evans.

At stages the game resembled a boxing match more than a game of Basketball.

Matt Wundenberg and Sam Harris tangled up mid way through the opening quarter which sparked some pushing and shoving.

Evans was pleased with the way his men handled the physical side of the game.

“It was a hard fought physical game,” he said.

“We have been working on physical stuff since the Willetton game and I think we did quite well with that tonight.”

Wildcat Stephen Weigh was the game high scorer with 37 points.

He took 34 shots on the night recording a field goal percentage of 35 per cent.

Zamroz netted 30 points including seven three pointers to lead the way for the Buccs.

East Perth managed only six three pointers from 23 attempts but Evans was not totally happy with the perimeter defence.

“We defended the perimeter well at times but at stages our rotations were a bit slow,” he said.

Evans was quick to praised the job done by Tom Witts on Weigh.

“Witts did a great job after (Aaron) Ralph did a good job to start with,” he said.

Offensive execution is generally the Buccs strong point but it was missing down the stretch according to Evans.

“Our offensive execution wasn’t as good as it could have been late but we hit some big shits,” he said.
