Redbacks finish top four

Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s and women’s State Basketball League teams have both made the playoffs in fourth position.

This represents the first time since 1999 the two Redbacks’ teams have simultaneously been in a top-four position at the end of the qualifying rounds.

The Redbacks’ men had 17 wins and nine losses and the women 14 and eight.

The Redbacks’ men’s team capped this off by winning its last qualifying round game against the Willetton Tigers 115 to 106.

This broke a nine-game winning streak for the Tigers and saw them topple from first into second place.

Redbacks’ centre Daniel Maddox was the Redbacks’ best player scoring 23 and bringing down 15 rebounds.

Veteran Redbacks’ shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 29 along with five assists and four rebounds while forward Jon Meriweather had 27 and seven rebounds.

Perth Wildcat Jesse Wagstaff scored 16 while bringing down nine rebounds while point guard Joel Wagner had 13 and 11 assists.

Recent Wildcat recruit Cameron Tovey top-scored for the Tigers with 41 along with 11 rebounds and three steals.

The Redbacks’ women’s team lost their last qualifying round game of the year against the top-placed Tigers 52 to 61.

Forward Brooke Hiddlestone top-scored for the Redbacks with 19 along with 14 rebounds while centre Marita Payne had 13 and 10 rebounds.

Shooting guard Kerise Delcoure scored eight together with five rebounds and three assists.

The Redbacks women’s team plays the East Perth Eagles in game-one of a three-game quarterfinal playoff series at 6PM on Saturday 26 July at the Morley Sport and Recreation Centre.

The Redbacks’ men’s team plays its first quarterfinal game against the Wanneroo Wolves at the Joondalup Basketball Stadium at 8PM also on Saturday.
