Hawks fly into top four (Women's Review)

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks picked up third spot in the women’s State Basketball League with a 64-60 upset of Rockingham Flames on the last day of the season.

Perry Lakes will meet Mandurah Magic in the quarter-finals, starting next weekend, while Southlands Willetton Tigers drew Lakeside Lightning, Rockingham meets Glasscraft Wanneroo Wolves and Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks plays Australian Central East Perth Eagles.

All series until the Grand Final are best-of-three, with the lower placed side hosting game one the first weekend and the higher side game two and game three (if necessary) the following weekend.

The Hawks were set to miss the top four with just one quarter left in its season, with it trailing 53-42 after three periods, but dominated the fourth to pick up a vital win, led by Lyndal Gardner and Tegan Walker (15 points each).

Perry Lakes finished 14-8 with the win, which saw it finish ahead of Perth and East Perth on the head-to-head tiebreaker.

Rockingham was assured of second spot regardless of the result after beating AND1 Kalamunda Eastern Suns 77-52 the previous night.

Perth had already secured a top four spot but missed its chance to finish third with a 61-52 loss to Willetton, with Kate Malpass (19 points) top-scoring for the Tigers and Brooke Hiddlestone (19 points) Perth’s best.

Willetton had guaranteed top spot before the round, but beat ATD Stirling Senators 73-60 on Friday night.

East Perth finished its season the previous round and would have made the top four had Perry Lakes lost, but instead finished fifth.

Mandurah avoided a quarter-final matchup with Willetton or Rockingham by beating Perry Lakes 60-49 and thrashing Stirling 70-46 the next night.

The Magic could have finished as low as eighth, but Casey Mihovilovich had 20 points against the Hawks and 26 points against Stirling to lead her side to sixth spot.

Mandurah’s two wins saw Wanneroo, which ended its regular season the previous week, fell to seventh.

Lakeside beat Carpet Court Southwest Slammers 66-49, led by Courtney Byrnes’ 19 points, but it wasn’t enough for it to avoid eighth spot.

The Slammers avoided a winless season at the last opportunity the following night, beating Metropolis Fremantle Cockburn Cougars 66-65, thanks to Kate Fielding’s 19 points.
