Redbacks stun Wolves
Jon Meriweather was the star for the Redbacks leading the comeback charge with 39 points, aided nicely by Wildcats development guard Joel Wagner (34 points).
Wanneroo led for the majority of the match, with the lead getting out to as much as 16 points early in the fourth period before the Redbacks went on a 13-point scoring run to drag themselves back into the contest.
Wanneroo head coach Phil Doherty said the mood in the change room after the game was one of bitter disappointment.
“We definitely let one slip tonight,” he said.
“But the boys know that it is a series and there are a few defensive adjustments we can make, particularly stopping Joel Wagner and Jon Meriweather.
“There are a lot of positives to be taken out of this game.”
Zachary Coverstone (39 points) was the top scorer for the home side but will need more support from his teammates in games two and three if the Wolves are to advance further into this year’s finals.
The series will now head to Belmont Oasis for the remaining matches with game two scheduled for Friday July 30 and game three, if required, Saturday July 31.
Earlier in the night, women’s quarter final action saw Wanneroo clinch game-one with a 79-74 win over Rockingham Flames.
