Redbacks sweep Wolves

Perth Redbacks secured their passage through to the semi-finals of the men’s State Basketball League with a 111-95 win over Wanneroo Wolves at Belmont Oasis on Friday night.

The win meant a two-nil quarter-final series sweep over Wanneroo and the first time in eleven years that the Perth men have reached the semi-finals.

Perth led all night and apart from a brief period in the third term where the lead dropped to as little as 8 points, Wanneroo never looked like seriously challenging the Redbacks.

Jesse Wagstaff was the top scorer for the home side with 27 points and 10 rebounds while regular contributor Joel Wagner (20 points) played the support role.

Perth Head Coach David Harris said he felt the momentum his side took out of their second half comeback last week carried over into the first quarter in game two.

“In the fourth quarter of game one we scored 47 points and in the first quarter this week we scored 37. It just felt like the momentum carried over,” he said.

Harris’ attention will now turn to Lakeside Lightning who also swept their semi-final against East Perth Eagles.

Harris said: “We actually match up pretty well against them (Lakeside) but Andy has a lot of tricks up his sleeve and he’s shown us this”

“There will be a lot of research for us to do.”

In women’s action, Perth ensured that both of their teams would advance to the semi-finals, also sweeping their series, winning game two against East Perth Eagles 61-58.
