Lightning set to face Redbacks (Friday Wrap)
The Lightning beat East Perth Eagles 105-87 and Perth beat Wanneroo Wolves 111-95 as both took their best-of-three series’ 2-0.
Lakeside jumped out to a 20-7 lead within seven minutes and held onto its advantage comfortably, with the gap never falling below five points.
Ben Beran led the defending champions with 24 points and Luke Payne added 22 while Wildcats star Stephen Weigh was the lone bright spot for East Perth with 34 points.
East Perth’s turnovers played a big role in its defeat, with it having 22 compared to Lakeside’s 11, while the Lightning scored 20 points off Eagles turnovers.
Fourth placed Perth carried its momentum from game one over as it also set up its victory with a strong first quarter effort.
The Redbacks led 37-22 at quarter-time and held onto that lead throughout after stealing game one of the series by dominating the last quarter 47-25.
Jesse Wagstaff led Perth with 27 points, the first time he exceeded 20 in five games, while former Wildcats teammate Joel Wagner had 20 points and nine assists.
Zachary Coverstone was Wanneroo’s best performer with 27 points and eight rebounds and Greg Hire added 20 points.
In women’s action, Rockingham Flames sent its series with Wanneroo to a third game with a 68-50 win in game two.
Perth swept its series with East Perth with a thrilling 61-58 win, with it to face Willetton or Lakeside.
