Redbacks teams make Semis

Redbacks teams make semi-finals Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ men’s and women’s State Basketball League teams both made the semi-finals after winning their quarter-final series games on Friday night.

This is the first time since 1999 that both Redbacks’ teams have progressed this far into the playoffs.

The Redbacks’ men’s team beat the Wanneroo Wolves 111 to 95, wrapping up the best of three-game series with their second straight win.

Perth Wildcat and Redbacks’ forward Jesse Wagstaff was equal game-high scorer with 27 along with 10 rebounds, while centre Daniel Maddox scored 17 and 12 rebounds.

Point guard Joel Wagner scored 20 along with nine assists and five rebounds and forward Jon Meriweather had 14 along with six rebounds.

Veteran shooting guard Ryan Neill scored 15 and five rebounds, while centre Michael Vigor had 13 rebounds and 10 points.

Zac Coverstone was the Wolves highest scorer with an equal game-high score of 27.

The Redbacks’ women’s team beat the East Perth Eagles 61 to 58, sealing the best of three-game series with two straight wins.

Centre Marita Payne top-scored for the Redbacks with 23 along with 12 rebounds and three blocked-shots while shooting guard Narelle Henry scored 14, including four vital points in the last two minutes.

Power-forward Brooke Hiddlestone scored 13 along with 13 rebounds and four assists while shooting guard Jacinta Bourne scored five and brought down five rebounds.

Perth Lynx player Ashley Gilmore top-scored for the Eagles with 27 and 11 rebounds.

Both Southside Mitsubishi Redbacks’ teams will be playing the first of their three-game semi-finals series at the Belmont Oasis Stadium, Abernethy Road Belmont on Friday night.

The Redbacks’ women will be playing the Willetton Tigers at 6.30PM, while the men’s team will be playing the Lakeside Lightning at 8.30PM.
