Buccs, Tigers move to Semis (Saturday Wrap)

Geraldton Buccaneers will face Willetton Tigers in the men’s State Basketball League semi-finals after both swept their quarter-finals series’.

Willetton claimed its best-of-three series with a 104-85 victory over Goldfields Giants in game two, while Geraldton beat Perry Lakes Hawks 106-82.

The Tigers led by 12 at half-time before outscoring the Giants 39-27 in the third quarter to guarantee its spot in the semis.

Cam Tovey top-scored for Willetton with 29 points, while all of Alex Prince scored all of his 21 points from three-point range.

For Goldfields, import John Vaudreul and guard Ryan Hulme put up the strongest resistance with 17 points each.

Geraldton was always in control as it comfortably took its series with the Hawks.

Perry Lakes suffered a serious blow in the first quarter when NBL guard Peter Crawford was ejected for head-butting Geraldton forward Aaron Ralph, and the Hawks were never able to recover.

Ryan Zamroz was the star for the Buccaneers, with the import guard scoring a game-high 24 points.

Young forward Ben Purser led the Hawks with 22 points while Brett Jefferies added 16.

Game one of the Buccaneers best-of-three series with Willetton will be in Geraldton next weekend, while Perth Redbacks meet Lakeside Lightning in the other semi after both swept their first round matchups on Friday night.

In women’s action, second seed Rockingham Flames was knocked out with a 56-47 loss to Wanneroo Wolves in game three, Perry Lakes advanced with a 68-62 win over Mandurah Magic and Willetton swept Lakeside with a 79-64 win in game two.
