Buccs maul Tigers in opener (Saturday Wrap)

Geraldton Buccaneers are just one win away from the men’s State Basketball League Grand Final with a 112-82 thrashing of Willetton Tigers.

The third seed Buccaneers have two chances to clinch the best-of-three series at Willetton next weekend and advance to face Lakeside or Perth in the title decider.

Second seed Willetton led by one point at quarter-time but was no match for Geraldton after that, falling as far as 40 points behind late in the game.

Geraldton extended its 10-point half-time lead to 26 just seven minutes into the third quarter and was unchallenged from there.

Former NBL centre Ben Pepper had 34 points and 15 rebounds in an incredible performance for the Buccaneers, while import Ryan Zamroz added 23 points.

The Buccaneers outscored the Tigers 46-8 off the bench, despite Willetton’s bench getting solid minutes due to foul trouble.

Daniel Johnson, Adam Nener and Ian Callaghen all picked up five fouls within three quarters for the Tigers, with Johnson sitting out for much of the run where Willetton fell out of contention.

Cam Tovey led Willetton with 22 points but scored 21 of them in the first half, with Ty Shaw next best with 21 points.

In women’s action, third seed Perry Lakes Hawks beat Wanneroo Wolves 68-65.

Tegan Walker was unstoppable for the Hawks, finishing with 26 points to lead her side to within one win of a Grand Final matchup with Willetton or Perth.

Rebecca Mercer top-scored for the seventh seeded Wolves with 24 points.
