Tigers turn table on Buccs (Saturday Wrap)

Willetton Tigers will play Geraldton Buccaneers for a spot in the men’s State Basketball League Grand Final today after winning game two of their semi-finals series 108-79.

The Tigers levelled the best-of-three series at 1-all, with the winner of the series to face Lakeside Lightning in the title decider next Saturday.

Lakeside swept its series with Perth Redbacks after winning game two 109-101.

Willetton jumped on top of the Buccaneers early, leading by 20 late in the first quarter and extending it to 24 midway through the second in front of a sold-out home crowd.

In a complete turnaround from last week’s 30-point Geraldton win, the Tigers were never challenged, with its biggest lead 36 points in the fourth quarter.

Alex Prince and Cam Tovey were the stars for the Tigers, with 32 and 30 points respectively, while Daniel Johnson had 21 points and six blocks.

Ryan Zamroz top-scored for the Buccaneers with 20 points despite picking up his fifth foul midway through the second quarter and fouling out in the final period.

Ben Pepper, who was Geraldton’s best player in game one, had to sit out a significant period with a face injury, with the Tigers using that to control the points in the paint tally 46-16.

Willetton also shot 18 per cent better from the field.

In women’s action, Willetton beat Perth Redbacks and Wanneroo Wolves beat Perry Lakes Hawks to force a deciding game three in both series’ today.

Willetton won 70-62, led by Melissa Marsh (28 points) while Rebecca Mercer had 16 points to lead Wanneroo to its 60-56 victory.
