Giants Streets ahead

THE SKILLED Goldfields Giants have moved to bolster their big men ranks with the signing of former US college basketballer Gary Street for the 2011 State Basketball League season.

Out-sized and outgunned by eventual champions Willetton during this year’s play-offs, the imposing figure of 206cm Street will add an extra dimension to the Giants which also announced the re-signing of forward Lordan Franich yesterday.

Originally from Perth, Street boasts experience playing both college basketball and American football on scholarship in the United States.

The 25-year-old played a season at right tackle for the Cardinals’ gridiron team at William Jewell College in Missouri. He beefed up to 140kg to play American football, but has slimmed down to 127kg for his return to basketball.

“I loved my time in America – it was definitely the best experience I’ve ever had in my life, ” Street said.

“I’m really looking forward to playing with the Giants and helping out the younger blokes on the team.

“From what I’ve been told so far, we should have a pretty deep squad.”

After starting out with the Perth Redbacks, Street played in Lakeside Lightning’s 2005 championship before heading overseas.

Franich played in three championships with Lakeside before enjoying a successful debut season with the Giants in 2010, averaging 11.2 points and 8.8 rebounds.

“We see both of these players as part of the long-term development and success of the club, ” Giants chairman Graham Crew said.

“Both players are in their early 20s and Lordan already has championship experience with Lakeside and 194 games at SBL level.

“Gary has had fantastic exposure to the college system and the opportunity to hone his skills with and against quality players and coaches.

“These players bring a rare blend of youth and experience to further develop the young players in our squad and enhance the quality and experience we already possess.

“Good-quality Aussie bigs are a rare commodity and we are excited to make these key signings in preparation for 2011.”

The latest signing follows last week’s reappointment of head coach Wayne Creek for a second term.

The Giants are not expecting the same overhaul of the playing roster as last season, which saw a massive nine changes.

However, there is no guarantee imports John Vaudreuil and Michael Haney will be back next season.

The Giants could have lost the services of young guard Hamish Bowden, who has returned to Queensland.
