Buccaneers face roster changes

SUN City Plumbing Buccaneers are faced with a gap to plug as the departure of Daniel Thomas looms.

The zippy point guard has been unable to sign terms with the Buccs due to university commitments and is living in Perth.

Buccs’ general manager Scott Rubery said “an open door” had been left for Thomas, but the club would not sweat on a decision from the 25-year-old.

“We’ve offered Daniel a contract which he hasn’t been able to sign,” Rubery said.

“We understand he has important issues off the court to deal with.

“Although we would love to have him back, we need to push on and continue preparations for the season ahead.”

Thomas said he was looking to find a suitable job while completing his studies.

“There’s several things I need to take care of and it’s better that I remain down here at the moment,” said Thomas, who confirmed he had been approached by country rival Kalgoorlie.

Reappointed Buccs coach Ray Evans is faced with a player list headache should Thomas change ships, as Tom Witts has also relocated to Perth for work.

The possible return of former import Michael Lay would help boost Evans’ challenge to seal the Buccs’ first State Basketball League title since 2000.

Lay is currently plying his trade with German club Holiday Check Baskets, averaging 19 points and 6.6 assists in five games.

The Buccs are presently scouring the college lists to find replacements for American duo SBL 2010 MVP Ryan Zamroz and Brian Connelly.

Rubery said Evans was eager to maximise the full capacity of big men Matt Wundenberg and Ben Pepper in 2011.

“Ray is looking to start both Ben and Matt together,” he said.

“While Brian (Connelly) is still an option, he wants a player who is also comfortable to step outside and shoot the ball.”
