NBL Wrap - Week Seven

Matthew Knight and Cam Tovey impressed for the Perth Wildcats, but it wasn’t enough to get them over the line against the Cairns Taipans in round seven of the National Basketball League season.

The Wildcats were disappointing in a 72-64 home loss to the Taipans, but Knight, of the Rockingham Flames, and Tovey, a State Basketball League championship-winning forward with the Southlands Willetton Tigers, were two of very few players who could hold their heads high.

Knight had 11 points and 13 rebounds from 30 minutes on the court, while Tovey scored two points from just 16 minutes. Shawn Redhage top-scored for the Cats with 14.

Other SBL players were more disappointing, with Australian Central East Perth Eagles forward Stephen Weigh held to nine points, while Eagles team-mate Damian Martin had four points and four turnovers.

Southside Mitsubishi Perth Redbacks power forward Jesse Wagstaff was also quiet, finishing with just two points from 12 minutes, as the Wildcats slumped to their fourth loss of the season and fell outside the top four.

Total Connections Perry Lakes Hawks star Peter Crawford was limited to just two points for the Townsville Crocodiles, but they still thrashed the Melbourne Tigers 94-66.

Corey Williams had 13 points for the Tigers in his return to North Queensland, while WA junior Luke Nevill had six points and four rebounds for the visitors.

Redbacks point guard Joel Wagner had another solid game for the Sydney Kings, but they still lost 89-72 to the Wollongong Hawks in the New South Wales derby.

Wagner controlled the game well while scoring five points from 26 minutes for the Kings, but his performance was overshadowed by Hawks star Gary Ervin, who scored a game-high 31 points while shooting at 60 per cent from the field.

Former Perry Lakes player Tom Garlepp had eight points for the Gold Coast Blaze but it wasn’t enough, as his side went down 100-79 to the New Zealand Breakers on the road.

Next week, Gold Coast host Sydney before travelling to Melbourne, Townsville embark on the doomsday double, visiting Adelaide and Perth, Cairns host Wollongong and the Kings meet the Breakers.
