Buccs add import Swingman

SUN City Plumbing Buccaneers have followed the recommendations of Ryan Zamroz by signing 6ft 6in American swingman Todd Brown for the 2011 State Basketball League season.

The 2009 SBL MVP slipped the Buccs a note about Brown at the end of last season.

Brown, a graduate of California’s Fresno Pacific University, became good friends with Zamroz after they competed against each other in college basketball.

He was second in the season points standings for the Fresno Pacific Sunbirds, averaging 13.2 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in 2009-10.

Evans said he followed up the tip by watching action tapes of the utility player and was immediately sold.

“He’s a good shooter and can easily go inside, Todd is going to bring a great amount of balance to our team,” he said.

The acquisition of Brown was the second bout of good news for the Buccs camp in a week, after the confirmed return of American guard Michael Lay.

Brown said he received good reports from Zamroz and feels he too could relish his stint in WA.

“I knew what kind of player Ryan was and hearing how much he loved it in WA made me think that my wife and I might really enjoy it too,” he said.

He was captain and State champion with Modesto Christian High School before moving on to FPU.

Brown rose to prominence in the Sunbirds to captain the side.

In 2008-09 the team placed ninth at the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletes Basketball Championships and Brown was named third-team All American.

The Sunbirds were also crowned conference champions in the same season.

Brown hoped his experience as a winning team member could help inspire the Buccs.

“As far as goals go, I want to come in and just work my tail off and help the team as much as I can,” he said.

“I’ve been blessed to have been on a lot of winning teams and knowing of Geraldton’s past success, I look to keep that up.”

Evans believes it is experience that added significant weight to the Buccs quest to bring him on board.

Brown believed his playing traits were applicable in all areas of the court.

“My favoured position would be that of a swingman, I love to go inside and out,” he said.

He said he was looking forward to touching down in Geraldton with his wife Tarin early next year.

“I will be enjoying the holidays while I keep gearing up for our departure to Australia, I can’t wait to meet everyone and get out on the court as a Buccaneer,” he said.
