SBL Referee Coaches To Go With Group Approach

After undertaking a thorough and comprehensive review of referee coaching and SBL rostering management at the conclusion of the 2010 SBL season, Basketball WA is pleased to confirm the initiation of a confirmed structure for referee coaching and all relevant process for the 2011 SBL season.

Unlike seasons past, 2011 will see the implementation of new procedures on how SBL referee coaches work together, relate and discuss matters arising from their weekly game evaluations in order to best regulate and manage referee progression and development during the competition.

The new procedure involves the following:

  • Once-a-month referee coach meetings to discuss game reports, key trends and areas of focus, POE reflection, referee performances
  • Recommendation of referee rostering based on performance as discussed at meetings for approval
  • Review of referee panels at the midpoint of the season

This initiative has been borne out of the interest in developing future referee coaches, create better opportunities for referee coaches to work collaboratively together, streamlining/creating a more efficient means of referee rostering for games and equally as importantly, provide consistent feedback for referees during the course of the season.

Basketball WA is now calling for nominations for referee coaches with the candidates asked to be aware of the small commitment of 6 meetings during the year in line with the new approach. It is especially exciting to become a referee coach and BWA encourages all new and interested parties to submit their interest.

More details can be obtained by contacting the BWA Competitions Manager, Christian Rice on christian.rice@basketballwa.asn.au.
