Parsons steps up to lead Eagles

East Perth District Basketball Association (EPDBA) is pleased to announce that Matt Parsons has been appointed Men’s Head Coach for the Australian Central Eagles for the 2011 State Basketball League (SBL) season and that Anthony Fletcher has also been re-appointed as Head Coach for the Australian Central Eagles’ Women for the upcoming 2011 SBL season.

As with previous coaching appointments the Club did not have to look far for a new Coach with 2010 Assistant and former Vice Captain Matt Parsons ready to step up and take on the head coaching position.

Parsons who was an assistant with the Eagles program last year takes over from Damien Chalk who resigned in mid January due to work commitments. Damien is already looking forward to seeing his former chargers in action during the 2011 season and catching up with the many friends he has made at the club.

“Damien did a lot to help this club move forward both on and the court during his reign and we are very grateful for his efforts” Parsons said.

Parsons a former national championship winner as a player with the Bendigo Braves in the SEABL will have plenty of help fitting into the new role with the appointment of 2010 Rockingham Flames Head Coach and EPDBA’s Junior Development Officer Adam Forde as assistant.

“Adam will be a great addition to the team this year, as last year he was placed in a very similar situation to what we are facing in 2011. Between the two of us, and our other assistant Matt Muir, I am sure we can continue to develop some of the talent that East Perth is starting to produce” Parsons said.

With news of the signing of former Geraldton Buccaneers’ Daniel Thomas and the retention of Wildcats’ Development Squad members Tom Jervis and Jarrad Balcombe, the Eagles again face the possibility of playing finals basketball after breaking through in 2010 for their first finals appearance in 14 years.

Daniel Thomas (25) is a Point Guard who has played the last two years with the Geraldton Buccaneers where he played finals in both years. Thomas’ previous basketball experiences included playing in Denmark and in the NCAA3 Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference for Pittsburgh – Bradford. Daniel averaged over 16 points and 6 assists a game in 2010 and with his ability to create and go hard to the basket and his strong ball handling he will fit in very well with the Eagles.

EPDBA is also pleased to have Anthony back on board for 2011 particularly after finishing fifth in 2010 and a finals appearance for the first time since 1989 when they finished fourth. The team made it through to the Semi Finals where they lost to the eventual Runners Up Perry Lake Hawks. The 2010 result was on the back of a near miss on finals in 2009 when the team made a late run winning 9 of the last 12 games.

Coach Anthony Fletcher said “We were pleased with the team’s results in 2010 and we are looking forward to improving again.”

Commenting on the appointments, EPDBA Managing Director, Brett Nazzari said “We are excited to retain people of this calibre which will continue to develop the basketball environment we believe will enable future basketballers to develop within and enjoy the game at the same time”.
