Buccs go Commando

GERALDTON Sun City Plumbing Buccaneers have taken a tough approach to preseason training by going commando.

No ladies they haven’t relinquished their underwear.

The Buccs have taken on beach commando training to be primed for the start of the SBL campaign on March 19.

The beach sessions are part of a strength and conditioning program the players have endured over the last six weeks.

Members of the squad took part in the first no-holds-barred beach session at Geraldton’s Town Beach on Friday morning.

The Buccs brought Lifespan fitness centre on board in a bid to shred the players down ahead of the long season.

Geraldton Buccs’ coach Ray Evans hoped the invigorated preseason would boost the players’ output on the hardwood.

“It’s the first time we’ve done this sort of thing, it’s been a great way of taking the guys out of their comfort zone and working on their core fitness,” said Evans, who himself endures the lung-busting routines.

Punishing abdominal exercises, beach sprints and lunges were all part of the treatment.

Evans believed a lack of fitness put the Buccs on the back foot during the opening rounds of the 2010 campaign.

“This program will compliment our training on the court,” he said.

“The fitter we are the better prepared we are going to be, there’ll also be less chance of injuries down the track,” he said.

The SBL Pre-Season Blitz will be the Buccs’ first opportunity to put preparations to work over the Labour Day long weekend from March 4.

New import Todd Brown is due to touch down in Geraldton on Saturday.

The camp remains hopeful fellow American import Michael Lay is on deck in time for the round one away clashes to Mandurah Magic and Cockburn Cougars.

The guard is presently residing in Los Angeles with his mother while she recovers from a minor heart attack.
